» Retired Pastor And Wife Accused Of Stealing A Baby «

Tuesday, paraded a 71-year-old man, said to be a
retired pastor, for allegedly stealing a year-old
baby.
The suspect was arrested alongside his wife by
the police, following an alarm said to have been
raised by the mother of the baby.
Abia State Police Commissioner, Mr. Joshak
Habila, who paraded the suspects, said the
arrests were part of the achievements of his
command for the month of August.
He said a month ago, a 21-year-old pregnant
mother reported that she lost her 11 months old
baby to a supposed friend under the pretence of
offering help to her.
The police boss said luck, however, ran out on
the supposed friend, when the anti- robbery
squad of the command intercepted him at
Owerrinta and arrested him for allegedly
trafficking pregnant girls to Port Harcourt, Rivers
State capital.
He said the arrest led to the discovery of a child,
who was previously stolen in Aba and allegedly
sold to the retired pastors’ wife, who was said to
have kept the deal away from her husband.
According to Habila, the suspect sold the baby for
N500,000 to the wife of a pastor who allegedly
lied to her husband that she went through the
normal process of adoption for the baby.
The wife of the pastor, the commissioner
explained, admitted to have paid for the baby in
the premises of Federal Medical Centre, FMC, in
Umuahia, through her friend, one Maria Mba, said
to a senior civil servant in Bende Local
Government Area.
But her pastor husband denied knowledge of the
illegal adoption of the baby, saying he had been
requesting from his wife the adoption documents
which he claimed he never saw till date.
The other suspects, Maria Mba and Ekwutosi, also
explained their role in the transaction, with
Ekwutosi saying he connected Maria to the illegal
deal.
He claimed that Mba approached him and
requested for baby girl which he arranged for
and procured, after which he invited them to the
FMC where the deal was finally sealed.
Though Mba said she collected the money and
gave to Ekwutosi N400,000 and kept N100,000
as part of her share of the deal, Ekwutosi denied
receiving the money from her.

» Buhari’s Integrity Will Soon Be Tested In Kogi - Vanguard «

Humanrights activist, Mr. Emmanuel
Adejoh, has assured the nation that Buhari’s
anti-corruption stance would soon come
under the light in Kogi State with the
emergence of Prince Abubakar Audu as the
governorship candidate for the All
Progressives Congress, ahead of the
November 21 governorship election in the
state.
Prince Audu is standing trial over sundry
corruption charges, ranging from money
laundering to embezzlement of public
funds.
In a chat with Vanguard in Anyigba, Adejoh
said the APC, under the leadership of
President Mujammadu Buhari, shouldn’t
have allowed someone whose integrity was
tainted to contest under his party.
He said: “The essence of the APC screening
of candidates for the election was supposed
to ensure that only credible people are
allowed to contest the governorship poll.
‘’I am not a politician but as a citizen of
this state, I am waiting for the day
Buhari will stand on the podium to lift
the hand of Prince Audu who has been
accused by the Economic and Financial
Crimes Commission of corrupt
practices.
“Though Audu has not been convicted,
many people in the state are already
insinuating that Audu is desperate about the
governorship in order to alter the course of
justice. But I think he has the constitutional
right to contest the election”.
Adejoh called on political parties in the
country to stop parading corrupt individuals
as candidates for political offices, saying
leaders must be people who only see the
good of all.
Meanwhile, a political pressure group, Team
Kogi 2016, has challenged the Economic and
Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, not to
be intimidated by the recent emergence of
Prince Abubakar Audu as the governorship
candidate of APC in Kogi State.
The group in a statement signed by
Comrade Sam Yinka, said it was imperative
for the anti-graft commission to
substantiate its charges against the former
governor in order to give the fight against
corruption in the country a new vista.
“In the days of Jonathan, political allies were
said to be shielded from anti-graft agencies.
President Buhari must know that the main
reason Nigerians voted for him was his
anti-corruption credentials. He must not
sacrifice this hope on a platter of politics,”
the statement read.

» FG Approves N400 Million Bailout For Nigerian Students Abroad «

The Federal Government has approved
N400 million for the payment of upkeep
allowances of Nigerian students on foreign
scholarships.
The Acting Permanent Secretary, Federal
Ministry of Education, Hajia HIndatu
Abdullahi, made the disclosure in an
interview with the News Agency of Nigeria
(NAN) in Abuja on Wednesday.
Abdullahi attributed the delay to non-release
of capital allowance and the change in
government which delayed the release of
capital allocation for 2015.
She explained that the upkeep allowance of
the scholars did not come as over head
allocation but capital allocation.
According to her, the allowance payable to
the scholars outside the country is from
January to December and it is calculated and
captured in the budget every year.
She said that the plight of the students was
being taken seriously, adding that “we just
have an approval of about N400 million, we
are now working with the Federal Ministry
of Finance to obtain it.
“After that, we will head to the Budget Office
and the Central Bank of Nigeria to ensure
that the money is remitted as soon as
possible to the missions.
“In terms of the paper work, we have
concluded; we want to pay something so
that their hardship will be minimised.
Abdullahi said the entitlements were being
worked out from January to December,
adding that in 2014, the students got all
allowances for the year between July and
August.
“Whenever we receive capital allocation in
the ministry, we work out the scholarship
money and pay into CBN.
“CBN will now remit same in line with the
information we have given them; it will
remit to embassies which will remit to the
scholars.
The acting permanent secretary said that if
there was any delay in the release of capital
allocation, it would affect scholars’ upkeep
allowances.

» Production: Kachikwu Gives Warri Refinery 90-Day Ultimatum «

The Group Managing Director of the
Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation,
Dr. Ibe Kachikwu, has issued 90-day
ultimatum to the management of Warri
Refining and Petrochemicals Company to
commence full production at the facility.
The refinery has the capacity to process
125,000 barrels of crude oil per day.
Speaking at the end of a facility tour of the
refinery and the adjoining Pipelines and
Products Marketing Company jetty and
depot in Warri, Delta State, Kachikwu
charged the management and staff of the
Company to ensure that the plant was
streamed back to full and active service
within the projected period.
The GMD noted that he was ready to
provide the necessary support needed by
the management of the facility in order to
enable them meet the target.
Kachikwu, in a statement from the
corporation on Thursday, reportedly said
“Whatever you need to do to get your
refinery back on track, please do it now
because this is the time. It’s a 90-day fast-
track programme and whatever you need
me to do to make that happen, let me
know.”
On Monday, The PUNCH exclusively
reported that barely a month after it
resumed production, the Warri refinery
was shut down again, a situation that may
constitute a setback to the new
administration’s current efforts at shoring
up local supply of petroleum products.
The NNPC’s spokesperson had told our
correspondent on Sunday that it took the
action because the pipelines supplying
crude oil to the Warri refinery had been
compromised by vandals.
It, however, said the closure would be
temporary as it hoped to reopen the
refinery on Tuesday.
Kachikwu, however, enjoined the
management of the refinery to resuscitate
the petrochemicals plant which was
commissioned in March 1988.
On the state of PPMC storage facility, the
GMD promised to end the era where the
company relied heavily on private depots to
store bulk of its petroleum products.
He said, “Some of the biggest storage
facilities in this industry belong to PPMC. I
recall when I was growing up in this
industry, we all got our products from
PPMC. In fact, the fear of PPMC then was
the beginning of wisdom, but now PPMC is
putting products more on the tanks of
marketers and letting them run the show,
but that is not going to continue under my
watch.”
Responding to the GMD’s ultimatum, the
acting Managing Director, WRPC, Engr.
Solomon Ladenegan, said measures had
been put in place to ensure that the plant
was back in full operation by early
November in good time for the three
months fast track moratorium.
“The 37-year old refinery which has been
undergoing phased rehabilitation exercise
was shut last week due to some technical
hitches in one of its units,” the NNPC said in
its statement.

“As soon as the CCB is through with the process,
the documents will be released to the Nigerian
public and people can see for themselves,” Mr
Shehu said.

Three killed as container lands on vehicles in Ojuelegba, Lagos

agos—A heavy duty container yesterday skid-ded off the Ojuelegba bridge, in Lagos, landing on a  Nissan saloon car and a Sports Utility Vehicle, SUV, killing three people in the process.

SCENE OF AN ACCIDENT WHERE A TRAILER FELL OFF AN OVERHEAD BRIDGE ON A MOVING CAR BELOW, AT OJUELEGBA IN LAGOS ON WEDNESDAY
An occupant in the Nissan car was dragged out dead when the container was finally lifted off the vehicles by 9pm.
The incident, which occurred at  about  4.45pm, reportedly caused a stampede as motorists plying the ever busy route  abandoned their vehicles and fled.
This also resulted in a multiple accidents, with fleeing motorists and commuters sustaining varying degrees of injuries in the process.
There were different accounts as to how the incident occurred. A version said the truck driver was trying to overtake another truck when the  container skidded off. Another version said that the  driver of the truck, who fled immediately the incident occurred, could have been drunk.
A mammoth crowd besieged the scene as sympathisers attempted to rescue the trapped driver of the SUV  from the debris of his car. As at 7.20pm, efforts were still on by combined rescue teams to remove the container from the car.

Why the container fell off — FRSC
While some eye witnesses claimed that the container could have fallen off because it was not latch, the Federal Road Safety Corps deduced otherwise.  The Lagos State Sector Commander, Mr Hyginus Omeje, when contacted stated that information at his disposal showed that the container was latch because it fell alongside the flat belt on which a container is  hooked.
According to him: If a container falls without the flat belt, then it means it was not latch and necessary action would be taken against its owner. But in this case, the container fell with the flat belt, indicating that it was latch.” The flat belt was severed from the head of the truck.
“There is an ongoing operation code named Operation Scorpion initiated from  the Corps ,  where we are on the the look out for unlatch container and its still ongoing he said”.
As at the time he spoke with Vanguard, Omesje said he was on his way to have an on-the-spot assessment of the damage.
Also, the  South West Spokesman for the National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA Mr Ibrahim Farinloye, confirmed that only one person lost his life as against earlier  speculation that several lives were lost.
He said: “Only one person is at risk and that is the  driver of the SUV jeep on which the container landed “.
On his part, the Lagos State Fire Service Director, Rasaq Fadipe said  two fire trucks were deplored to the scene of the accident at Ojuelegba, immediately information reached him, to co

Boko Haram Near Extinction - Army

Colonel Sani Usman, Nigeria’s army spokesman, has gien the proof that the military will be able to meet President Muhammadu Buhari’s deadline in neutralizing the deadly Boko Haram group.

It should be recalled that Buhari, who was sworn-in on May 29, 2015, recently gave the army three months deadline to stop the insurgency.

Usman speaking to the VOA said its forces on September 1 recaptured from Boko Haram the economic and strategic town of Gamboru Ngala on the border with Cameroon.

According to him the operation engaged the air force and army.

“They gave us fire power support, aerial bombardment and the ground troops entered,” army’s spokesperson said.

He added that the retaking of Gamboru Ngala is the evidence that the army will be able end Boko Haram until December 2015, in coordination with neighbors Cameroon, Chad, Benin and Niger, which formed the joint military force.

“It is a fact of life. Today, the Nigerian army was able to capture the strategic town of Gamboru Ngala in the northeastern part of the country. It is so important to both the Nigerian people and of course the insurgents themselves,” Usman said.

“There’s a renewed cooperation, a collective responsibility not just among the Nigerian people and the Nigerian military but the neighboring countries as well under the auspices of the new Multinational Joint Task Force,” he continued.

Army’s spokesman said Gamboru Ngala forms economic comnnections between Nigeria and neighboring countries such as Cameroon, Niger, Chad, and Central African Republic.

There was no separate verification of the army’s claims. Usman said the military has severely degraded Boko Haram’s power to wage war.

“This singular act of recapturing Gamboru Ngala has further demonstrated that Boko Haram is about to become extinct,” he said.

President Buhari has made halting Boko Haram’s six-year-old insurgency a priority in his agenda to save Nigeria.

A suspected suicide bomber seeking to blow up the Yankari motor park in Bauchi, Bauchi state, has been apprehended. According to a security source who confirmed the arrest to TheCable, the man was trying to gain admittance into the park when the explosives on him were spotted by metal detectors fixed to the entrance. “The man came very early in the morning, around 6am, and was trying to enter. But he was unable to achieve his aim,” the source said. “Security at the gate detected the bomb, and they caught him. Most of the parks now have metal detectors since Boko Haram has been targeting crowds of people that can usually be found at parks.” The suspect, described as “a grown man”, was handed over to the police. The man must consider himself lucky to have been turned in to the police, as a suspected woman bomber arrested in similar circumstance in March was set ablaze. A mob at the Muda Lawal market was infuriated by the woman’s refusal to submit herself for a search, and therefore concluded that she was a Boko Haram member on a sinister mission. Ena, a resident of No. 13, Palace Road, Alagbado, Lagos, is being tried for breach of the peace and assault at an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court in Lagos.

The Prosecutor, Sgt. Kehinde Olatunde, told the court that the accused committed the offences on Aug. 2, at his residence.
He said that the accused unlawfully assaulted his neighbour, one Miss Elizabeth Okpaku, by stabbing her with a bottle on her head.
“The accused stabbed the complainant with a bottle on her head for playing loud music.’’
Olatunde said that the accused unlawfully entered the apartment of the complainant to stab and damage her property.

“The accused forcefully entered the complainant’s room and ordered her to reduce the volume of her DVD player, claiming that it was too loud and was
disturbing him in his room. “The complainant refused to comply, saying that the volume was not loud, so the accused forcefully stopped the music
by throwing the DVD player outside and also damaged her generator set.
“He also descended on her by beating and stabbing her with a bottle.’’ The offences, Olatunde said, contravened Sections 166 and 171 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.
Section 171 prescribes a three-year jail term as penalty for convicted offenders.

The accused pleaded innocence of the offences and was granted bail in the sum of N50, 000 with one surety in like sum.
The Magistrate, Mr Aka Bashorun, adjourned the case to Sept. 21, for mention. (NAN)

» $15bn Oil Deal: Why Indian High Commissioner Is After Me – Alison-Madueke «

Nigeria’s former Petroleum Minister, Diezani Alison-Madueke, on Wednesday, chided the Indian High Commissioner to Nigeria, Mr. Ajjampur Ghanashyam, over his allegations that as former minister, Alison-Madueke ‘sat’ on a $15 billion oil deal.

Alison-Madueke who spoke through her lawyers, Messers Chike Amobi and Co., dismissed the allegations, describing it as spurious, unfounded and libelous.

Diezani Alison-Madueke

According to her, the High commissioner, Mr. Ghanashyam’s acrimony towards her is due to the refusal of the Federal Government of Nigeria to allow the Indian company, Oil and Gas Commission Videsh Limited (OVL), default on its contractual obligation to provide a $6 billion investment, (around RS36, 600 crore) in an 180,000 barrels (bpd) Greenfield refinery and 2,000 megawatt power plant or railway line from East to West of Nigeria.

In a release made to journalists in Abuja on behalf of the former minister, she said the publication by Mr. Ajjampur R. Ghanashyam to the effect that she delayed the approval of oil concession to twin Indian companies, Oil and Gas Commission Videsh Limited (OVL) and Mittal Energy International JV, OMEL (MITTAL) in 2006, after receiving a $25,000,000.00 signature bonus, is spurious, false and lacking in substance.

Madueke clarified that she was not the Minister of Petroleum Resources in 2006 when the said Indian companies entered into contractual agreement with the Federal Government and as such wouldn’t have received any signature bonus either as citizen or minister of the Federal Republic.

She also said she had no personal reason to sit on the contract just as she wondered why the High Commissioner would “choose to malign and attack her rather than commend her acting dispassionately in recommending for refund of the said signature bonus to the Indians when the matter was brought to her attention at the twilight of her tenure as minister.”

“When the issue of the request for refund, made by OVL, was re-presented to me in May 2015, I immediately prepared and dispatched a letter dated 13th May, 2015, Ref #: PI.LM/3900/S.693/Vol.1/78b, to former President, Goodluck Ebele Jonathan (GCFR), recommending for the refund of the said signature bonus in compliance with the relevant and extant laws of the Federal Republic of Nigeria which requires such approvals to be granted by the President, and implemented by the Federal Ministry of Finance.”

Mrs. Madueke further explained that the Federal Government voided the contract with OVL because the company wanted the Federal Government of Nigeria to waive the commitments they made during the bidding process which included investing $6 billion (around RS 36,600 crore) in an 180,000 barrels per day (bpd) greenfield refinery, a 2000 megawatt power plant or a railway line from East to West of Nigeria, all of which were considered in granting the concession in the first place.

On the allegation that the Indian High Commission to Nigeria suggested that contrary to global best practices in the industry, Mrs. Alison-Madueke used intermediaries to receive payment for crude oil transactions with India, clearly imputing a fraudulent ill-feeling to the former minister’s operation, she explained that the contract in question was a government to government crude oil sales transaction with established procedures which predates her tenure as minister.

She also said that the established procedure stipulates that the buying country, in this case India, selects and presents a local company as its agent to transact on its behalf as it is never the responsibility of selling country to select or nominate a company for the buying country.

She maintained that Nigeria never dictated nor suggested any intermediary or marketing company for India for the purposes of the said transaction.

Emeka Ike Accuses Pastor Chris Okotie Of Plotting To Destroy His Marriage

Nollywood actor, Emeka Ike, has accused the founder and head pastor of Household of God Church, Pastor Chris Okotie, of being behind the plot to destroy his marriage at all cost.

Emeka Ike, in a statement, said he was crying out because of the “desperate desperation” of Okotie to destroy his home.
The feud between the actor and his wife, Suzanne, had degenerated almost beyond resolution, with the wife filing a divorce suit before a Customary Court in Lagos.

Emeka Ike said he was compelled to alert the whole world of the “devil” behind the plot to destroy his home, after all efforts to beg his wife to drop the divorce bid failed.

The actor accused Okotie of hiring a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) for his wife just for the purpose of destroying his home.
He alleged that Okotie gave his wife about N500, 000 for her mother’s burial and also bought her a blackberry passport phone.
Emeke Ike further said every Sunday, Okotie would call his wife out in church with other single women and ask that gifts should be given to them.

He further alleged that Okotie with another man in the church helped his wife to secure a job without his consent.
The man in question, Emeka Ike alleged, recently had issues in his marriage over a love message which Suzanne sent to him.

According to the statement, Emeka Ike said:

“I want people to look into this issue critically. I’ve never beaten this woman in my life. When she ran out of home, I called my pastor and they took us for counselling. For one week, I was begging her every day; I would go home alone and she would go home alone as well.
“At a point, pastor asked us to write five things we like and dislike about each other. The pastor said that maybe we could work it out. I wrote mine, she wrote hers and she never said there that I used to beat her. I still have that document with me. She gave me what she wrote and I gave her what I wrote. If I used to beat her, she could not have left it out from that then. Any man that beats a woman is a coward. I know that someone somewhere must have done something to her. How can I beat a woman I adore so much? I love my family and this is very unfortunate. Her children have been begging her to come home, and she has refused.
“I am pretty sure my wife is acting confused; she is acting as if she is under a spell, which is psychological and then she is acting under blackmail.
“There was a time I accused her of bringing men to my house. I mean, which woman will wake her husband up in the middle of the night and said to him, share your property I want to get my share now from what you have? Tell me, which woman will do that if not acting under a spell?
“There was a time I travelled and she closed down my school and sent all the students away. So, there is a lot to it, other than the allegation of battery against me and I want the whole world to know. My name is precious to me and I don’t want anything to drag it in the mud.
“Pastor Chris Okotie just absolved my wife into his church without making any effort to get in touch with me. If as a pastor, your church member is having issue with her husband, and you failed to do anything to resolve it, what kind of pastor are you? When I called him, he refused to pick my call. He also failed to react to a text message I sent to him. Is that a man of God? Even, if you have a police case, they will make effort to hear from you before taking a position, not to talk of the church.

“When we went to court, I told my wife that I’m interested in amicable settlement of the matter, and that I still want her back. But she refused. Even, if you don’t want me, what of your children, I asked her and she still would not listen to me. I want the whole world to know because there is a lot of misinformation out there. The lawyer which Okotie hired for my wife is also frustrating every attempt I make to resolve the matter peacefully,” he narrated.

When contacted, Pastor Chris did not pick the numerous calls made to him

Nigerians Will Soon See The ‘change’ I Promised– Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari has assured that Nigerians will soon see the fulfilment of his election campaign promises.
He spoke on Wednesday in Abuja while receiving university students.
The president assured Nigerian youth that his government’s anti-corruption campaign would secure their future.
In an address to members of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) who marched to the presidential villa to pledge their full support for his anti-corruption campaign, President Buhari promised that he will do his best to place Nigeria well on the way to becoming the nation of their dreams.
“Everything you have asked for are the things that will make for a good country, and what we are after is a good country, a country where our youths can have a future and a hope,” the president said.
“We are totally committed to building a country where our youths can realize their full potential.
“You can be assured that your welfare and well-being are topmost in our minds and very soon you will see the things we have promised come to fruition.
“During the campaigns, change was our slogan, but today it is no longer a mere slogan, it is now a reality and we will see it in every facet of our lives.
“The youth will feel it, the adults will feel it and old people will feel it and we will get the country of our dreams,’’ the president, who was represented by his Special Adviser (Media & Publicity), Femi Adesina, said.
Mr. Adesina later received a document addressed to President Buhari from the NANS President, Tijani Usman Shehu, and promised that the president will look into their requests.
In his remarks, Mr. Shehu said the students were united against corruption, cybercrime, prostitution, human trafficking, drug abuse and other anti-social vices.
“Nigerian students demand that our future must be secured and we strongly believe in the President’s zero tolerance for corruption,’’ he said.
